Week 3 - Matthew 8

Matthew 8: 1-3

New International Version

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy[a] came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

1.      Could Jesus have healed the leper without him asking Jesus?

2.      What does the leper’s request tell us about his expectations/ belief/faith?

3.      What significance is there in the fact that Jesus touched the leper?

4.      Could Jesus have healed the leper without touching him?

5.      The passage states that “Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy”. What signs would the leper and the crowds see that would indicate that this was so?

6.       How difficult would it have been for the leper not to tell anyone?

7.      If the leper disobeyed Jesus and went around telling everyone what Jesus had done and then failed to show himself to the priest and perform the required sacrifice would that have caused the leprosy to return?

8.      What did Jesus mean when he said “as a testimony to them”?
